Oddities with keyboard navigation in tables

Postby jolinwarren » Fri Apr 23, 2010 10:04 am

The improved keyboard navigation in tables that 2.7 introduced is hugely welcome! However, there seem to be two issues:

Cmd+arrow key combinations
When in a table cell, it seems that cmd+right arrow is equivalent to pressing tab and cmd+left arrow is equivalent to pressing shift+tab. This means that there's no quick way to get to the beginning and end of a line when in a table cell (as this is the normal function of cmd+l/r arrow). I have to use multiple presses of opt+l/r arrow to achieve this. The cmd+l/r arrow combinations are deeply ingrained in my muscle memory and so I'm constantly moving between cells when I want to move to the end of a cell's line! The same problem holds true when trying to select from the current cursor position to the end of the line -- pressing shift+cmd+right arrow ends up selecting the entire current and next cell, instead of the characters from the cursor to the end of the line.

Using left and right arrow keys when all the text in a cell is selected
If all the text in a cell is selected (not that the whole cell is selected), if I press the left arrow or right arrow keys, the text is unselected and the cursor moves to the end of the previous cell or the beginning of the next cell, respectively. This is counter to the standard behaviour where the text is unselected and the cursor is placed at the beginning or end of the text that was previously selected (ie. the cursor shouldn't move to a different cell in the table).

I can't tell if these are bugs or features(!). Either way, I would really appreciate them being fixed/changed. In the first case (cmd+arrows), we've lost functionality, only to duplicated something that can be achieved with the tab key. In the second case, I can't see what the point is (I suspect this one is likely a bug), and it makes editing text in tables fiddly.

Overall, I do like the new keyboard navigation between table cells in 2.7, but it has actually been a huge regression in terms of navigating and working with selections of text within a cell. Hopefully this can be fixed!
